The development agreement was terminated on 30 June 2018. Since then a team at the district council has been putting work in place to make sure we can maximise the benefits and opportunities the site brings to the city and the district.
Lots of local people have commented and made suggestion, either in letters or emails direct to us, or through the letters page in the Mercury. We really appreciate all your input and know that you all want to see this area developed to add value to our city and its community.
Our view is that it is vital the Birmingham Road site developed in a balanced and sustainable way and by doing so we will add to the city and the community’s quality of life.
We share local people’s frustrations around Friarsgate not being delivered and want to see results quickly, but we also recognise that such development schemes take time and instant results are impossible to deliver. We also recognise that we need to be thorough and professional in investigating the opportunities the development site now presents to determine what is most viable and suitable both for the site and the market, so that the site is not developed inappropriately, or worse still not at all.
We know how passionate local people are about the site, so we’ve put togehter this website to keep you up to date on progress and give you an opportunity to get involved and have your say.
We’ll be holding a series of consulation events in 2019 on the longer-term plan for the site, and we’d love as many people to come along as possible. Watch this space for news. Also watch out for updates on our blog which we’ll aim to update regularly to let you know the most recent position.
We’ll also tweet and post facebook updates, to keep as many people up to date as possible, so please do follow us:or .
